Note : ...............................................................
The Beacon Theatre has closed for
6 > 9 months Renovation and will supposedly reopen
in March 2009 for the ALLMAN BROTHERS
40th. anniversary shows there.
Let's hope that MSG's Jim Dolan doesn't
ruin this like every else he touches !
MSG will be closing for Renovation from
June > September 2009. They will be removing the
seats from the best Loge sections ( 100's + 200's ),
to make way for Corporate Luxury Boxes.
They will then remove the current boxes from the
upper nosebleed sections and replace them
with seats. They will then raise the ticket prices
for all future events. We the people, will pay for
the corporate boxes with our tax dollars and
increased ticket prices. Thanks Jim Dolan.

Back in February of 1995,
one of my friends > Bob Grosswiener,
( who is one of the most prominent, prestigious,
smartest,
but not the nicest
of music critics in New York City's history )
said that if Greg Allman and Jerry Garcia
both didn't head to Rehab immediately,
they would both be dead by the fall.
Greg did and lived, Jerry waited tooo long and died.
Bob was right ! ......................
13 years later and Rumours are flying around that
the Allman Bros. traditional March Madness shows
at the Beacon, have been set back to May
beacause of Greg being at rehab.
Rumours also speculate that Mr. Van Halen has
rescheduled some shows for the same reason.
Amy Winehouse is no role model,
but is easily the best new artist seen in a long time.

The NYC music scene continues to deteriorate
as we watch corporate greed and
Developers gone wild.
CBGB was closed under the vengeful
discourse of BRC leader Muzzy Rosenblatt.
The Mayor's office did nothing to help. This was
a Landgrab for fast rising Real Estate. It was
Confiscated under False pretenses, and under
the guise of helping the homeless,
of which the BRC does not do a very good job.
Hilly Kristal died on August 28, 2007. This man single handedly brought about
the PUNKrock Revolution.
He created the most famous music hall
the world has ever known.
I hope he will be remembered by all the
record company executives he helped make rich.
CBGB's is now little more than a breeding
ground for flies, which line the walls + windows.
Thanks to muzzy rosenblatt, BRC + the mayor,
this place has been closed in a land grab
for future luxury condos.

ClearChannel's Flagship Theater >> Irving Plaza has changed their name to . Fillmore New York .
Is this a Joke ?
This is the equivalent of Haliburton
changing its name to Green Peace.
While they are at it >> Why not change:
the Hammerstein Ballroom to the Mudd Club
Roseland Ballroom to theElectric Circus
Gramercy Theater to Max's Kansas City
City Hall toCBGB's
Justin Timberlake to Joey Ramone
Where will it all end.
This is Sacrilegious.
It is not as if Irving Plaza doesn't have a
worthy history of its own.
It's probably following the Beacon
as having the Most Great Rock Shows
of any venue still operating in NYC.
I've seen over 1,000 shows there, literally.
I remember the first time it closed ( 1986 )
and the RAMONES played the last show.
It's really one of the best rock clubs anywhere.
Hiding behind the veil of the
greatest venue that ever existed,
in a smoke screen of Psychedelia,
will not change the opinion that most
music lovers have of them.
Bill Graham must be rolling over in his grave !
Clearchannel + Haliburton >>
now that would be a good venue name !

" History Lesson 101"
" ROCKTOBER " $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Back in the early 1980's,
WNEW - FM's legendary .............
Scott Munie explained the True meaning
of. Rocktober.
......... October has the most Concerts of the year,
for strictly financial reasons.
Shows in October usually go on sale in September
and September is the richest month of the year
for college students. This is the time when
they receive their student - loan money, federal grants,
and money from their parents to get them
through the entire school year .
.......... Hundreds of thousands of
American college students ( both foreign + domestic )
with thousands of dollars suddenly in their pockets ! .
Other times of the year, and they wouldn't be so lucky;
being able to purchase their favorite concert tickets
right away, before they sell out.
The Concert Promoters, being well aware of this,
in turn put on more shows.
........ This actually increased the musical
+ cultural background of the American Youth
as well as narrowing their money spent on drugs + drinking;
which in turn results in higher grades
and better learning curves !

Status Quo No Show David Peel + the Lower East Side and Concert Joe

When buying Tickets on the street,
be wary of the New York city street
Hustlers !!! .. About only half of the
scalpers are semi-trustworthy.
Many will sell You Counterfeit tickets.
Those outside IRVING PLAZA are
notorious for this. That's why they
have the Large sign outside stating this.
MSG is just as bad. Try to buy
off a credible ticket broker instead.
Rather, try to buy them off someone
actually attending the show, who had
a friend who didn't show. Always offer
a little less than their asking, at first.
This is known as bargaining.
Outside MSG, they'll try to sell
you phony tix at twice the price; while
in Jersey, outside the Meadowlands
or Giants stadium, you can probably
get Legit tickets for only half the price.
The same goes for Jones Beach, which
is a State Park and actually subject to
different Laws than those of. Long Island.
Therefore, if you get caught selling a
ticket there at any price, you can
be arrested ! .. Because of this, ( most
of the time ) you can get a ticket outside
for half-price or less. Some people have
been fined there, as well as NYC, for just
attempting to Buy a ticket. Be Careful !
Many Venues sell additional tickets,
for sold out concerts, on the day of the
show. Because of .corporations, tourists,
and hotels, willing to play premium
prices for all major events, NYC is
the hardest city to buy tickets in.
Sometimes it is better to call a
Ticketmaster in another city, to
get tickets for a New York city event.
I remember a situation outside a
Grateful Concert at MSG, around 1992 :
Two teenage girls were at a moment of
realization. One said to the other
" He wouldn't rip us off, would he ?
He wouldn't just split with our money.
He WILL come back with our tickets.
We gave him our last $100 over an
hour ago ! .. Oh my Gosh ! "
( And they never got in )
I also remember
watching a tourist couple on their
Honeymoon, who asked a stranger
to take their picture outside MSG.
A few seconds later, their expensive
brand new camera was gone quicker than
if it had its own legs, never 2B seen again.
Today, I-PODs are a hot item.
When wearing an I-POD, try 2B aware
of. what's going on around you, because
if you don't, the muggers will ! ..
The white earphones are a giveaway. Try to get
different color earphones, and don't wear
your I-POD where it can be seen.
I suggest wearing only one earphone,
so you are more aware of your
surroundings and what's going on.
Don't count your money on the street
or in the subways and don't flash jewelry.
And REMEMBER :
you're not in
Kansas anymore !
When traveling the subways alone at
night, try not 2B the last person getting
off the train. As in any Jungle, the last
one in the Herd is usually the first
2B picked off. And those in front of you
won't see what's happening.
2B or not 2B
QUESTION :......What is the #1 killer ............. of. Women in New York city ?
ANSWER : ... Those who visit ATM's ................................... alone at night !

Bally's Hotel + Casino in Atlantic city,
has a unique new state-of-the-art
sound system for all
their concerts :
there are no speakers
or amplifiers on stage !
The musicians plug their instruments
into jacks, which are installed in the
floor of the stage. From there,
they are transmitted to wireless ear-sets.
These fit over the ear and the volume is adjustable
by each member of the audience.
Considering the
poor quality of music one hears
at most rock-concerts today;
( where volume, distortion and
electronic effects, are often chosen
over sound quality ); I welcome this
system for unified sound quality for
every person regardless of where
they are located in relation to the mixing board.

were an item. That is, if a couple is
charged $50 each ( = $100 ), you end up
paying 100 + 9 + 15 = $124 . Where this
extra money ends up is anybody's guess.
Sometimes they refill your drink
automatically, whether you ask them to
or not. Sometimes they charge you for
drinks you never ordered nor received.
Sometimes they try and take advantage
of people who are inebriated and might
not notice so easily, or Tourists who are
less likely to question them out of
fear of embarrassment.
............... Sometimes, even
when you prove to them that they
overcharged you, they say it's to much
trouble for the computer to change it,
so just pay the bill and call back the
next day and complain to management.
Some clubs charge you exactly twice
the price for a double than a single drink.
Some clubs charge you $10 for a large
soda. If there is a minimum per person,
per table, then they charge you that price
whether your bill comes out to that
amount or not. Some of these places
serve watered down drinks and inferior
food at gourmet prices.
....... When possible,
use your charge card to hold a
reservation rather than pay for it.
When you get to the club, try to purchase
your ticket before you sit down so you can
pay for your drinks separately. You can
say you're going to stand up, then after
you pay, say you changed your mind and
decided to sit. Some waiters attempt to
embarrass someone into buying another
drink for their date, whether that
person wants one or not.
..........You can also go to the bar and buy
drinks to bring back to the table as
to keep your table bill simpler. ........... Some clubs charge reduced
admission when you stand up at the bar
rather than sit down. They often forget
to charge you a minimum at the bar.
.............. A number of. clubs lie about
their show times, in order to have people
drink for as long as possible before the
show starts. A few clubs don't have the
main act come on stage until 11 or 12pm.
............ If you have money to burn, then
fine, but if you are on a limited budget,
and need to conserve, then go eat at a
restaurant with a prefix theater dinner. ......... Go drink at a local bar during
happy hour. Then go to the music club
and stand up and you'll be able to go
out on the town twice as much.
............. Remember,
there always someone trying to hustle
someone else in New York city.
The Big Apple has a lot of hidden worms.
There are alot of. Tourist traps in the
main thoroughfares that try to take
advantage of unwary travelers !
99% of the time, when a show or Tour is
cancelled, it is due to lack of ticket sales,
regardless of the excuse given ! ...............
ZOOMA Tour was cancelled due to ........
lack of .Ticket sales. ...............How a show featuring
Trey Anastasio + Ben Harper has this ...
problem is beyond me ? . .When most of
America is infatuated with Britney Spears
+ Ashley Simpson ( who often Lip-Sync ) ,
it makes me wonder what this world is ....
coming to ! . Most of the music today on .
radio, T.V. + Awards shows, is pure .........
garbage. At least in NYC, we have such ..
a large musical variety, we don't have to.
succumb to the McDonald's-of-music that
the rest of the country is subjected to. ..... Joey RAMONE must be rolling in his..... grave !.............. GOD help us ! ............
FRIENDS we've lost along the way ! _________________________________

Clarence"GateMouth"Brown
( whom I consider a Pioneer of Rock n' Roll )
passed away on September 10, 2005 at his
brothers house in Texas. He was a New
Orleans native, who fled from Hurricane
Katrina, which took a toll on his already
failing health.
............. Back in the late 1940's, on his first
Blues albums, this Grammy winning multi -
talented musician developed some of the
Blues + rock 'n' roll guitar riffs, that are the
basics of much of today's music. He wa 81.
His kind are few and far in today's world.
Attending one of his concerts, was also the
equivalent of a Guitar lesson.
He will be missed.

Phil Kramer was a worthy
guitar player, an avid concert-goer and a
good Friend. I first met Phil at a college
radio station at Brooklyn Polytech in 1975.
He was easily mistaken for Jerry Garcia.
He was a mainstay at WETLANDS and a
friend of numerous Rock Stars ( including
Mickey Hart and Warren Haynes ). I'd
seen him play with his band ( Mind's Eye),
as well as memorable duets with Lex Grey.
He also jammed at Wetlands,
Space at Chase, with Chukka Riddim, etc.
He hung out at Nitingales, Dan Lynch's etc
He was at all the GRATEFUL DEAD shows.
People often mistook us for oneanother.

On Wednesday .April 13, a great
legend died. The Great JOHNNIE .JOHNSON .
In the early 1950's, he hired a young
guitarist named Chuck Berry

It is debatable that these two Geniuses
invented Rock n' Roll, but Chuck got
most of the credit. It has been said that
Johnnie taught Chuck how to play his
his piano riffs on the guitar :
And thus Rock n' Roll was invented.
I last saw this
piano player at the old Tramps club.
What would the music industry be
like today, if he had never been born ?
He will surely be missed

Women Beware !!! ################################ Something to remember the next time
you are out at a bar or music club,
and a stranger offers to buy You a drink.
If. You say yes to an offer for a Free
drink from someone that you don't know
that well; it is well advised that you make
sure that the drink goes from the waitress
or bartender directly into your hands.
If. for any moment that drink
has been out of. your sight,
it is possible that something has been
slipped into it, such as the
many rape - drugs often carried by
non - caring deviants that frequent these
clubs in search of. unsuspecting women.
Also, never leave your drink
unguarded when you go to the restroom
or out to smoke a cigarette.
More often than you'd like to know
about, has a young innocent woman
found herself. feeling strange and
sleepy, in a dream - state that
soon turned into a nightmare.
REMEMBER :
You're not in

Be safe and be well, and act responsibly.
Then go out and have yourself a Good Time !
A term used to describe most of the music
played daily on most of this country's
radio stations.
It also refers to the attention given
by the media and is responsiblefor
most of the CD sales.
Good looking, well dressed,
yet musically retarded so - called musicians,
with no originality, innovation or

Degradation of the 20th. century music genre'.

Shape of.Things to come ???
Some clubs have been proofing people,
even
those well up into their fiftys.
People with Gray hair and wrinkled skin,
almost ready for Social Security,
are being checked for their age.. People whose
underwear is ten years over the
legal drinking age limit.
They swipe their license through
a card reader, so that the bar code
on the rear, gets scanned.
Is this to be saved in
some sort of. Database for Big Brother ?
Will they come after you if you have
any outstanding summonses or warrants ?
Could this be some form of. tracking us ?
Another unnecessary
infringement of our FREEDOM. !!!
Eventually, will we have our I. D. scanned
at every music or sports event we attend ?
I hope the reality of
George Orwell's "1984", does not become
tomorrow's reality !

Buying Tickets off the Street !
..............................................................
When buying Tickets on the street,
be wary of the New York city street
Hustlers !!! .. About only half of the
scalpers are semi-trustworthy.
Many will sell You Counterfeit tickets.
Those outside IRVING PLAZA are
notorious for this. That's why they
have the Large sign outside stating this.
MSG is just as bad. Try to buy
off a credible ticket broker instead.
Rather, try to buy them off someone
actually attending the show, who had
a friend who didn't show. Always offer
a little less than their asking, at first.
This is known as bargaining.
Proceed with CAUTION .! ...............................................................
Beware of the Borg !!!
( Borgata Hotel + Casino @ Atlantic city ) Reasoning is Futile !
If. You don't have a ticket and try to
buy one from someone there, BEWARE !
They will most likely accuse You of. Scalping
and try to throw You out, while all the while
there are people Scalping tickets
literally under their noses.
They have everybody under
constant video surveillance
and if they see anyone buying
or selling a ticket, they can refuse
them entry to the show. This is most
definitely not an Ethereal environment
or user friendly.
The incompetent casino security
hasn't a clue to what's really going
on around them,
and are far from being
the brightest bulbs on the planet !
Guess only being open for a year is
still not long enough for the borgata
to get their act together.

is that most of them

CONGRATULATIONS
My favorite NYC rock band, SeaMonster celebrates their 22nd. Anniversary
The Origin of the JAM-BAND scene,
probably began with Jimi Hendrix,
CREAM, PINK FLOYD, and the
1960's San Francisco Psychadelic bands.
Back in the 80's, there was no jamband
scene. Only 3 Jambands existed : ...... the real GRATEFUL .DEAD, ......... and the ALLMAN .Brothers, . . and SANTANA . ( and 10,000 grateful dead cover bands )
Then in 1988, a Rock club
called Nitingales began
having two unusually FUN bands
called BLUES .Traveler
and SPIN .Doctors.
They played unorthodox jams that
were so hot, they sometimes left
scorch marks on the stage !
Nitingales was managed by one cool
dude named TOM, who sometimes
booked the bands. He gave
Blues Traveler and Spin Doctors
their first shot in NYC. ......
This was a bar that years before ,
drew max-capacity (150) to see legendary Joey Miserable + the Worms ,
whose menbers were Slapmeat Johnson,
Milo-Z, leader>>Simon Chardieu,
( and also Blues Traveler
mentor ) Jano Manson, etc.
Around the same time, up in Vermont,
Phish was reaching new horizons
by mixing styles of the
Dead, Zappa, and Santana.
Then on 2-13-89,
the inevitable happened : WETLANDS.PRESERVE opened !
This was the Greaaaatest Club
in the history of the Planet ! They gave 100 Grand every year
to save the Rainforests !
I credit the owner, Larry Bloch,
and booking agent, Walter Durcatz,
for creating the JamBand scene,
there and then !!!
They brought a bevy of Psychadelic
and uncanny bands to New York city
that was unknown since the
San Francsco Hippie era of the 1960's.
Bands such as : PHISH, Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors,
Dave Matthews, Warren Haynes, GOD st. Wine, Widespread Panic,
Authority, New Potato Caboose, Machine, First House,
Rusted Root, Solar Circus, String Cheese Incident, Mad Hatters,
Joan Osborne, Other Half, Skadanks, Poi Doi Pondering, Sons of .Jubal,
Black 47, Dreyer Brothers, Xanax 25, Ani Difranco, Rage against the Machine,
Bob .WEIR, Robert .HUNTER,
Wallflowers, Dread Zepellin, Zen Tricksters, Jah Levi,
Casselberry + Dupree, Arnie Lawrence, Dr. JOHN, Counting Crows, etc. played
there ! ......... just to name a few.
The Quintessential, and by far the best
of these new Jam Bands, was PHISH .!
The WETLANDS
was where PEARL .JAM made their
NYC debut at the New Music Seminar.
Talks by Living Legends Timothy Leary, Ken Kesey, Ken Babbs, Wavy Gravy, Kurt Vonnegut jr. ,
High Times magazine, etc.,
were conscious--raising.
They had their own genuine resident
Rock Critic, Cree McCree and
Sound mixers Dean + Mark as well.
Then Chris Zahn brought his expertise
to manage all aspects. Chris held
Wetlands together along with Jake.
Chris also booked and discovered bands.
Chris was the one who gave .. JEFF .BUCKLEY his first break
at a Major club. .. ( Also Screaming Headless Torsos, MOE, Hootie + Blowfish,
Disco Biscuits, etc. )
Later, Peter Shapiro took over the
reigns. Peter saved the day
and much more ! ......
He maintained the standards and also ....
kept the influx of up-and-coming ............
Psychadelic bands into New York city. ....
Jake Szufnarowski and .....
Scott Long helped. ..............
Today, Jake runs the Tribeca Rock club ..
and Rocks-Off Concert cruises ................
and Scott manages many aspects of all ...
the Knitting Factory's ( nationwide ). . This is one scene the music industry
almost waited too long to jump aboard.
During the first year, I notified
David Frie and Ron Delsener about the
magnificent goings on here ( such as the 13 schoolbuses that transported 650
University of .Vermont students to NYC
for Phish's first gig here in 1989 ! )
Ron Delsener agreed to break his policy ( of not booking bands unless they were
signed by a major label ) and booked
my three favorite bar bands ( Phish,
Blues Traveler, + Spin Doctors ) at his
newly opened ( 1989 ) MARQUEE club
on W. 21 st. .He had everything to lose,
and we owe him a debt of gratitude. .....
David Frie was the catalyst for this;
taking bands from Wetlands and ......
propelling them to National status,
often leaving the Wetlands with the
short end of the stick. Only about .5
people ( myself included ) were aware
of the behind the scenes goings on !
David Frie was a Concert Genius and
saw potential here. He later became
the manager for Blues Traveler, taking
over the reigns from the son of the
legendary Bill Graham. David was the
first person I ever saw using a laptop.
Many of these Wetlands bands, forgot
where they got their start from.
PHISH cancelled their Halloween 1989
gig there, to play for more money at the
Marquee club, even though they were
already scheduled, and advertised in the
Village Voice, to play the Wetlands. ( Though not morally right,
it was most likely the
smarter move for their career. )
However, later that night,
after the Marquee gig ,
Trey Anatasio showed up to jam at the
Wetlands. I saw and taped both shows.
Mr. Delsener took a chance and we all
benefitted ! .If not, we could still be
listening to disco ! ..All Jam Bands and
their fans owe him a debt. He + Mr. Frie
brought those bands from the small
clubs to the Major Leagues.
Relix and High Times magazine
were always there.
Today, Peter Shapiro and
High Times magazine, bring You
the JAMMY's and the STONY's
and continue the movement forward.
Therefore, Grateful Dead Enterprises,
BONNAROO,
JamBase, Relix,
Mr. Shapiro, Zahn, + Delsener are
probably the guiding force
behind this today. There is a movie
about WETLANDS currently
being produced .
Therefore : if it wasn't for WETLANDS, Larry + Walter, Ron + David;
Chris + Peter , there
would be no JAMMY's, ...................... .........no BONNAROO, ....... ................ no JamBand scene period !
AMEN .!
Lest we not forget the people
who started it all : Bill Graham & Chet Helms
Please pass this on to Future Generations !
